Excerpts - "Yes'm, my Maw got herself kilt and they burned our cabin, "he states matter-of-factly.

               "I am very sorry for your loss; you are welcome to stay here. Would you mind if I think of you as another brother?"

                The boy throws his arms around her and holds her tight, his head buried beneath her bosom, and then tears start streaming. A woman has not shown him this much concern, ever. To his mother he had been more of an inconvenience than a loved extension of herself.

                 She lets him remain until the tears stop and then taking him by the shoulders looks him straight in the eye. "Sam you are a great child, one that I have enjoyed teaching and I want you to know that I am your friend. I want to talk with you further but right now run and help the others get their things." She uses her dress to dry his damp cheeks, "Everything's going to be alright, now you get along."

                "Yes'm, he says and is out the door to do her bidding.

                She says after him, "It's killed not kilt' Sam."

                "Yes'm," he shouts back ...........
